I know I did. As a woman, I’m constantly dealing with serious but also imaginary emotional problems, and when I have none I manage to find something else that puts stress on my nerves. Food can really be a true comfort factor during these periods. My car broke? I’ll just eat a chocolate while at work to put a sweeter light on the situation. My boyfriend ignores me? Problem solved with a couple of make-up cream cookies. It feels so good to simply relax and forget all the stressing stuff and it’s equally simple to add a few more pounds to my weight!

I have considered this aspect a lot and decided to take a deeper look at my alimentary habits. The conclusion was obvious: whenever I’m stressed, I immediately turn to food. Food is a good friend, it doesn’t talk back, never gives me advice I don’t really wanna hear, and manages to reduce the stress I feel. Furthermore, I find the sweet taste of sweets tempting each time I feel exhausted. I could kill for a piece of chocolate in those moments. And after a day, I will feel terrible and very ashamed and quilt for all these excesses I make, especially if in that day I’ve just weighted myself.

I’ve read any articles about emotional alimentation, but always though they were gibberish, something to make people keep on reading without any meaning at all. But when I stopped and decided to evaluate for myself all the negative effects of my actions, I realized that I was in fact intoxicating my body with various substances. It’s just like we a committing a slow but sure suicide, even if it’s just a social one.

Now, when you realize you are down that unfortunate path also, you are again tempted to leave yourself undergo depression and would very much prefer a couple of chocolate cookies. But there’s still time, don’t give in just yet! Maybe the following notes that you might be already aware of will help.

1. Sports

If you feel so depressed that you just have to eat an extra cookie, there’s a way to eat it without fearing extra pounds. Burn those calories with exercises, and you’ll also burn the quilt you feel after eating sweets.

2. Listen to music

Music helped me a lot. Whenever I felt stressed and anxious about something, the right type of relaxation tunes set me straight. I’ve read somewhere that music can even replace light medication for overweight people.

3. Talk to someone

It took me a while to understand that my fight with extra pounds is not my own fight. I wasn’t the only one in this situation; I wasn’t the only one with emotional problems. There are many people out there, and some are in more severe emotional stages than you and me.

4. Stay busy!

The more things you have to do, the less time you will have to think about food. This is a practice that worked for me regardless of the thing I was trying to stay away from.
